The Centre for British Studies at the University of Bamberg was founded in March 2000 and will be formally opened in 2003 with the introduction of an MA course in British Studies.

It is a teaching and research institute focussing strongly on current British political and sociological debate while retaining an emphasis on the historical dimension of each area of research. The curriculum will result from interdisciplinary cooperation in the Arts, economics, English language and literature, geography, history and political science.

The applicability of knowledge to the job market will be a priority of the degree programme, providing students with contact to commercial concerns, media institutions and cultural organisations. Successful MA candidates will be able to join the Centre's PhD programme.

The CBS works together with a range of British and German partners to offer a programme of conferences, lectures and other events of both academic and general interest.
