In addition to literature, linguistics and didactics, cultural studies are a major aspect of the research activities and the teaching in the department of English at Essen University. In the Didactics & Technology Enhanced Language Learning section, Essen's Anglistik focuses on the role of cultural studies in language learning.

The use of new technologies in this area, e.g. "Landeskunde" and intercultural learning through WorldWideWeb projects, chat and e-mail exchanges, are the special expertise of this section. Apart from British Cultural Studies, activities within the department are concentrated on Canadian Studies and South African Studies.

Essen's Southern African Studies Centre (SASC) was started in 1985 as a sub-division of the English Department. Its founders were inspired by the need to pay attention to what had been and is indeed still happening on the outskirts, or rather at the burgeoning new centres of the English speaking world.
