Teaching and research in British studies at the University of Hanover
focus on literatures and cultures of the English-speaking world. Not
only are Britain and Ireland of interest but also Anglophone literatures
and cultures in Africa, the Caribbean, Asia, Australia, New Zealand, etc.
Cultural Studies are an integral part of the English Department, the
different research and teaching fields (i.e. British and American
Studies, linguistics, and teacher training) and the B.A./M.A.
programmes. In British Studies seminars, for example, fictional texts
are analysed and related to their political, historical, and social
background. Films, images, and non-fictional texts (such as newspaper
articles, historical documents or theoretical material) are also subject
to discussion.
The English department also offers some flourishing programmes and
activities such as student exchange programmes with Britain and the US,
summer schools dedicated to the New English Literatures and Cultures, an
English Theatre Group which stages a play each semester, and a media
library.
