Philologische Fakultät - Institut für Anglistik - Kulturstudien Großbritanniens

"Kulturstudien Großbritanniens", British Cultural Studies, deals with contemporary culture in the British Isles as a whole, i.e. Great Britain and Ireland. Historical developments are seen as a decisive influence for the present state of affairs. The stress within this wide field of research and teaching is put on regionalism, regional and national identities within the United Kingdom and in the Republic of Ireland.

This, again, is placed within the framework of European integration, globalisation, and the recent debate about the British Constitution. The department comprises one professorship, two senior lecturers and two assistant lecturers.

Special Research Interests
Supervision of above all M.A. theses on diverse subjects from the field of British Cultural Studies, a majority of them are related to regionalism in the British Isles, Englishness, Scottish nationalism and the Northern Irish Problem.

Apart from questions of regionalism in the United Kingdom the European question and how it influences UK politics and the British constitution is of major interest. Another field of research is consumer cultures and identity constructions by means of consumption. A conference to this subject was held in Leipzig in November 2003 and is documented in the "Journal for the Study of British Cultures", vol. 11, no. 2/2004.
