The English Department at Otto-von-Guericke-University Magdeburg places a special emphasis on Cultural Studies (compared to literature and linguistics) both in our Magister courses (which will be discontinued) and in our new BA (and MA) programme. Thus for our students it is a requirement to cover Cultural Studies right up to their final exams.

Contemporary social, political and cultural issues are linked with an historical interest as well as a special focus on gender. Film and media studies are part of the students' programme, too. Since ‘New English Cultures' are a special feature of the department, topics such as the Empire, postcolonialism or present-day Britain's multicultural society feature prominently in our seminars and lectures.
