The Department of English Studies (Anglistik) is that section of the Department of English Philology at the University of Mainz which is primarily devoted to British literature und culture - though not exclusively.
The proseminar and seminar courses and lectures cover various areas and aspects of British literature, ranging from medieval literature to contemporary literature, especially contemporary drama. Some members of the department specialise in other literatures such as Irish literature or Postcolonial (Commonwealth) literatures and teach courses in these fields; in addition, there are courses on various topics which are not offered regularly: for example, the Gothic and New Gothic, detective novels, English Campus Novels, drama or novel to film. Students who are of a more theoretical turn of mind might be interested in courses addressing questions of literary theory in general or concentrating on certain fields such as gender studies.
A full course of studies for degree-seeking students (English as a major, English as a minor or English for the Civil Service Examination for Teachers [Lehramt]) includes lectures, proseminar and seminar courses, introductory courses, phonetics, essay, translation and culture studies courses.
