British Cultural Studies is an integral part both of the Paderborn B.A. in English and American Literary and Cultural Studies and of the new Master of Arts in the English department. Research and teaching focus on representations in a wider range of media (images, films, television, literary and non-literary texts etc.) and analyse the identity constructions they convey. In this way, semiotic methods are combined with the political concerns underlying British Cultural Studies in the original Birmingham approach.
We emphasise interdisciplinary connections with other departments and try to balance theoretical considerations with practical applications, including the relevance of Cultural Studies for teacher training.
There is a special interest in the following fields:
- New Cultural Geography
- Black British culture
- The Victorian Age
- Gender Studies
- Consumer identities in contemporary Britain
- British political culture
- Teaching British Cultural Studies
- British theatre
